Sausage Balls

Here’s an oldie, but goodie. Many of you probably already have this recipe. If so, let this serve as a reminder that this easy-to-make appetizer is always a hit, no matter the occasion. Serve them this weekend with July 4th cocktails. I think the recipe originated on the back of a Bisquick box. My mom made them for almost every party we had.  When you first start mixing the ingredients you’ll think they’ll never come together to make a soft, pliable dough, but press on. It’s worth the effort. Make ahead and store the unbaked balls in the freezer, if you like. No need to thaw them before you bake.

1 pound spicy hot bulk sausage
4 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
3 cups baking mix, such as Bisquick

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a medium bowl, combine the sausage, cheese, and dry baking mix. Mix together with your hands to create a dough. Shape dough into walnut-sized balls. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes. Serve hot.
