White Sangria

The calendar says it’s autumn, but here in Virginia it still feels like summertime. I’m going with the flow and continuing to entertain outdoors and soak up the warmth as long as it lasts. Sangria seems just about right for this transitional time. It’s crisp, colorful, crowd-pleasing, and oh, so beautiful. Be sure to serve it in clear pitchers and glasses to showcase its loveliness.

3 tablespoons sugar
1/2 cup Calvados
1 lemon, sliced
1 lime, sliced
2 peaches, cut into wedges
3 green apples, cored and cut into wedges
Handful of fresh cherries
1 bottle dry white wine, such as Rioja
Sparkling water, chilled

Combine sugar, Calvados, lemon, lime, peaches, apples and cherries in a large pitcher. Pour bottle of wine over the fruit mixture. Chill for several hours. To serve, spoon fruits into glasses and pour wine over top of fruit. Top glasses of sangria off with a splash of sparkling water and serve.
